Recently, I was called upon to lead a little chapel time for a group of three, four and five-year-olds. While this would strike fear into the heart of most, as a retired preschool director, I wasn't too concerned. Everything went smoothly, with smiles and singing and fun being had by all and soon it was time for the final prayer. No sensible human closes their eyes (not even for a minute!!) when faced with controlling a group of 25 preschool children, so as I asked them to fold their hands and bow their heads, I kept a sharp eye out for shenanigans. They were like little angels, all ready to pray and off we started.... and then I noticed three little girls in the very front. They had their eyes squeezed shut but they must have noticed the tremor in my hands before they bowed their heads, for their little clasped hands were trembling mightily in loving imitation of mine. This, they had evidently decided, is how one best communicates with God! I managed to contain my rising laughter, but I finished that prayer off in a bit of a hurry, adding a silent "Thank you" of my own for the gift of such a delightful sight.
