My doctor has me on amentadine. The side effects are awful and I feel worse than before I took it. Has anyone else been given this medication and if so how are your side effects,

Hi,
My father was given amentadine, he also had bad side effects. He was having all sorts of hallucinations. Even though he knew the hallucinations were not real, they disturbed him and so the dose he was given originally was reduced to just once a day to help with the dystonia. He also takes madopar. The specialist had to keep changing the madopar about until we found the dose that suited him. Too little madopar and he couldn't function, too much and his blood pressure kept dropping when he stood up. He seems to be very sensitive to most medication because he has been tried on several different medications and has had bad side effects from them all. Even though his mobility is limited my father has decided to just stay with what he has. Personally, I would like him to keep trying, but the choice is his.

I have reduced the amount of ropinirole I was taking daily from 15mg to 9mg as after taking the tablets I would begin to feel faint and dizzy which I now understand was because the medication can lower blood pressure. The doctor has now prescribed sinemet tablets for me to help control the number of off periods I have in a day because the 9mg dose of ropinirole is not really enough. I take half a sinemet tablet at the moment to get used to them but I have read a long list of horrific side effects (including twitching, spasms and fainting to name but a few) I am now afraid to increase the dosage without hearing from anybody else who is taking sinemet to see if they have any problems with spasms and fainting and such things. I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks

I have been on amantadine for about 15 years. I hate the side effects too. It causes red blotchy skin, especially on my lower legs, plus ankel swelling. Another side effect, vivid dreams, which I have, is annoying.

The only reason I stay on this medication is because when I tried to stop it, I experienced difficulty walking and frequent freezing episodes.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Hi Mary, My name is sandy from New Zealand. I have been taking sinemet for the past 5 and half years 25 over hundred with amantadine. After so many years medicine was not working I had Spasm and seizures, dyskenisia (at times) and in bed all the time. I then went to India (mumbai hospital) where i saw a neurologists who changed my tablets to sinemet CR and gave me pramipex instead of requip. From then my health is much better, seizures has stopped. Breathing exercises and yoga helps me a lot. But am on pain killers (panadol) at times.

Hi I was diagnosed 8 years ago. Currently I take 9 sinemet/day dosage level 62.5. Sinemet does lower your blood pressure and can cause faintness if you stand up too quickly in some people. In others it can make you faint out. Experimentation is the key. We are all different and the effects on each individual is different also. Do not be afraid to try these medications. It may be your salvation - for a while at least. My above level of sinemet was causing me to go "off" before my next pill was due and was prescribed Rasagiline. I take 1 1mg tablet first thing in the morning. For now I get through the whole day without going "off". It must be stressed that this is what works for me and not necessarily everyone. Hope this helps. Have a really good day. :)
