Hi,
I am a new member (newly diagnosed Feb-2008) of the PD family.
I am happy to share with you my thoughts and my hopes.
I live in northern New South Wales, Australia.
I work full time - 5 days per week - but am finding it harder to keep this up. I am thinking of changing to 3 days but am worried of getting bored at home by myself. My husband works full-time.
I am a wife/ mother/ grandmother
I have 2 beautiful Alaskian Malamute dogs
and one chocolate point burmese cat
Regards

Hi Clair. Our PD stories seem very similar. I have been recently diagnosed (Jan. 2008), work full time - have 3 wonderful adult children 2 sons and a daughter- none married yet so hence, no grandchildren- but I am looking forward to that time! I too, am considering part-time work - do find it harder to keep going at the 40 hours+ pace due to stress, getting over-tired, etc- all that seems to exacerbate my symptoms. I think 3 days per week would be perfect for me- and I am not afraid of boredom- too much else we can do to fill our time- like exercise, exercise and more excercise! I understnd it to be crucial with PD- to keep movemnt patterns strong and to help delay more symptoms.
Gotta run- hope all is well with you this day.
Chris

Hi Clair, I am 53 and was diagnosed three years ago. The stress of work and lack of sleep have me considering retirement. I am not afrais of getting board. I have two grandkids with a third on the way. It is the fear of feeling like I gave in that keeps me working. I am sure I will get over that soon. Gail

Hi Gail
hope you don't mind me replying
If i gave up work it would be the company i would miss, i work 3 days 9am-1pm, I will be 60 August
I found it very interesting what you said
It is the fear of feeling like I gave in that keeps me working
can i ask, if you didn't have PD , and wanted to give up for the same reason, would you feel you have given in
I believe betting PD is by doing/getting what you want out of life
If you said you would be sitting at home doing nothing, then yes you would be giving in to PD. but if you did it, to start another chapter in your life then No way[hope that makes sense]

Hello Clair - Jennifer the Kiwi here. I have a B & B so work 7 days a week, although I have daily help, but we are in the process of putting it on the market and I can't wait to retire! It's very difficult to find time to look after yourself and work at the same time. I had a good exercise routine during the winter, and early spring, but then comes the busy season and it's 5 months non-stop. No time to read or walk. I have hiking sticks (from Europe - telescopic) and I highly recommend them but I've no time to get out!!!! Everyone I know who has retired recently wishes they did it years earlier.

hi christine,
i dont know how you manage full time work i only work 22hrs over 5 days and thats enough for me, you must listen to your body you will know when the times right to slow down a bit more, does your family still live with you i have 2 sons and 1 daughter who all still live at home some days its like a mad house, so when they are all out its bliss but i would miss them if they were,nt there, hope to speak to you soon take care susan.

This is something I really struggle with. I always feel like I need to prove myself. Not to anyone else, just to myself.
