Hello. Actually, I'm the husband of Barb. She's throwing up right now because she just started taking Sinemet today for the first time. She took the first dose this a.m. and started feeling sick around lunchtime. Can anyone tell us if this is typical? She's been taking Mirapex and Azilect for some time now without any complications.
It's bad timing. Starting a new medication during Mem. Day weekend.
She's been wanting to connect with others. We found out about this forum from an e-mail from lianna. She was diagnosed with P.D. three years ago at the age of 52.
I'm sure she'll write more herself when she's feeling better.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds. :)

hi! i am linda & have had Pd since 1997. i had been put on many dirfferent PD meds. i have had to be changed many a times not B/C it did not work but B/C of the side effects were greater than the relief, good it did. it's like weighing the pros & cons of the med. when i was 1st put on sinment, i was always sick , nauseas but was really helping me w/the pd systems. my nuero said the side effect will of nausea will evently go away. when? he could not give me a time frame B/C we are each have a different body system. and behold it took about 9 months & it went away. so actually you have to pick the lessor of the 2 evils! for me , mostly all the new meds have given me side effects. comtan used to give me nightly nightmares but working good. afrter 1 yr. it stopped. for a while i would not take it @ pm. but i
am o.k now. i was on mirapex which was doing also good but the terrible side effect i got & was proven latter, i got a compulsion. compulsive gambling which caused severe problems. never had that problem before. as soon as i suspected it was mirapex i told my nuero. he hadn't yet heard of it not yet later he did. but he weaned me off of it immediately then behold no more urges to gamble! so although it had done my pd good, the side effct was horrible. again everyone is different. some people have no problem w/ mirapex , maybe other meds.

WELCOME! BarbfromMaine,
I'm so glad that your husband wrote in to us for both of you. My husband is on Sinemet and Requip. It is very good for him. Sinemet does cause nausea but maybe if you take it with some Premium Saltine Crackers or something like them, or a few pretzels--and a little soda to swallow the pill, you won't get nauseaus. If the Sinemet proves to be good for your PD, most likely the side effect of nausea will diminish and eventually go away. Don't take it on an empty stomach (unless your doctor strictly advises you too). It's too bad that it is the Memorial Day Weekend otherwise you could get in touch with the doctor who prescribed the Sinemet. Maybe you could call his answering service and being a holiday he might have left instructions with them to get in touch with him if there's an emergency. Just so you could tell him about the nausea and throwing up and ask him what to do. I know some doctors who do this on holidays. Good luck...I hope your's does.
My husband Tony and I hope you will feel better by morning. Look forward to talking with both of you soon again.
Have a good day tomorrow.
Don't give up...We are all rooting for both of you.
Margie :)

Thank you all for your kind words. Yesterday we followed "Tinkerbell's" advice and bought some motion sickness wrist bands. They seem to be helping somehow. She's now on day three of the Sinemet and the nausea isn't as bad - at least she has not had any more vomiting episodes. She's also trying to time things better with food, so that should help. So, that is a good thing. :)
We wish all of you sufferers and caregivers well as we continue to fight the good fight! Thanks again.

I'm so glad Tinkerbell's advice brought some help. As for timing things better with food...the timing to take Sinemet regularly each day at set times is very important. It will definitely help. Not having had any more vomiting episodes is a very good sign. Hope by the morning Barb will be feeling much, much better and if she does, so will you.
Yes, definetely keep up the good fight. WE ARE GOING TO WIN...PD IS GOING TO LOSE!
I hope both of you have a good day tomorrow.
Margie :)

I was following a thread from Tinkerbell, what a lovely name don't you think. when I saw your letter re Sinemet. I also was very nauseous when I first took it and was given 'domperidone' to counteract this, I thought it rather silly, but it worked and after a few days I was able to stop the anti-sickness pill. Works quite well as a travel-sickness pill, also I have used the bands. I am the worlds worst passenger, driving okay. Hope Barb finds a suitable t/pill. My Doctor gave me one which was a waste of time. However he approved of a Pill I purchased in a Chemist in Germany. I take Re-quip - (Ropinirole) and sinemet and this was fine, Doc checked the ingredients. It is called "Reisetabletten-ratiopharm', (Wirkstoff: Dimenhydrinat) green/black box. if you have any contact in Germany they might be able to help, it really is excellent, I travelled across the channel in a Force 8 gale, no problems, both ways, I still don't believe it.
Good Luck, peak to you again soon I hope.
