Hi, I am Diane. My husband has PD. We live in Waxahachie Texas and we have 3 dogs: Conan O'Brien, a 4-year old lhasa apso; Troy Aikman, a 12-week old parson russell terrier; and Boo Radley, a 5-year-old airedale with 3 legs. The 2 small dogs live inside the house, and the airedale lives in the fenced backyard. I am going to try to put their pics on here, but I have not tried it before. Wish me luck.

Hi Diane,

Good luck in posting the pictures of your three dogs. I'm trying to learn how to do that too. Maybe over the week end I will have some time that I can devote to this new adventure.

Margie :)

No, I had not posted anything before. I went to photobucket because I saw that is what you use. The downloading was quick and the instructions are really simple. I guess there is still hope that I can be dragged into the 21st century!

hi diane, your dogs are all very cute are they well behaved?.

Hi, Susan. Boo and Conan are very well-behaved, but Troy is a puppy and therefore completely uncontrolled. I took Boo to Puppy school when she was a baby, and we both had a lot of fun. Conan is just a Mama's Boy, and stays right by my side. I don't even need to keep him on a leash. He is really protective, though, and will sometimes growl and try to nip at anyone who seems to threaten me.

I know one yorkie, and he has so much personality, it sometimes seems he could can talk and joke. Is Lucky very small? What kind are your other terriers?

Good luck on posting the pics. I found photobucket to be really easy to use. I am glad Heather used it and I found it through her pics.

Hi,
The dogs are lovely. I have one dog a minature schnauzer. He is called Buddy and is 3 years old. He is brilliant! In the past I have always had boxers. My father was always the main dog walker. He walked the dogs for an hour in the morning and again for another hour in the evening. He did this every day no matter what the weather was. When he wasn't there I would do it. When my last boxer died I knew that due to my fathers parkinsons it would be cruel to get a big dog as my father couldn't exercise it and I wouldn't have the time, so settled for a smaller dog. I thought we were really settling for second best, but I have to say Buddy has been a real blessing. He might be a small dog, but he's got a big personality. I don't know what my father or I would do without him. I haven't got a photo on this computer, but when I get one I will post it.
God bless

Hi, Geraldine. I see you are online. did you ever get a photo of Buddy? I would like to see him. What is he like? Do you know his breed? I, too, have always had large dogs (airedale, cattle dogs, retrievers) until about 4 years ago, when we got Conan, the lhasa apso at a local "trade days". He was just a cloud of white fur! He was supposed to be for my son, but he quickly became my constant companion. I even took him to work with me every day for a long time. He is so lovable and protective. He is the first dog I have ever had who is a full-time house dog. He never goes outside, except with me or my husband or son. He sleeps in a crate near our bed and waits near the door for me to come home at noon and in the evening. When I leave, he sits at my husband's feet. My husband was reluctant to have a dog in the house all the time, but he has come to love Conan as much as I do (maybe not quite that much! ;) ). I have two other dogs, but that will wait for another message. :)

hi everyone. i just have to get in the dog stories. my husband has pd and he has always liked animals but they were always "my" dogs. we usually had larger dogs but they were all house dogs. about 10 years ago i adopted an older pomeranian and have adopted 2 other older ones with health problems that no one really wanted to take on. but a year ago i adopted a 4 year old pom and my husband absolutely loves her. he worries more about her than himself. which is a good thing. thanks for letting me tell you all about my dogs. we actually have two poms right now and a big dog also.

Hi Jo-Ann,
Just like your dog, my dog is my father's best friend. He is the best medicine he could have. No matter how bad things are my father always puts the dog first. In the morning if he can manage it, he will feed the dog first thing. Doesn't matter what is happening the dog has to be seen to first. Two Christmases ago my father was sent home from hospital unable to walk. I believe it was the fact that he wanted to walk the dog that got him back up on his feet. Every morning come rain, hail or shine my father comes with me to walk the dog. On the mornings he doesn't come I know that he is feeling bad. When I am leaving for work in the morning the dog sits on my father's lap and looks at me as if to say just you go we don't need you.
No matter how bad my father's mood is he always has a kind word for the dog. I just love to watch the two of them together. They are definitely God's creatures!

Hi Susan,
He is a Minauture Schnauzer. The breed is originally from Germany. He doesn't shed his coat and has to be clipped every 12 weeks. He is great natured and loves people, but at the same time he likes to spend time on his own. He disapears during the day and we usually find him in my father's bedroom sleeping on the bed.
They also don't need much exercise but I feel guilty if he doesn't get walked twice a day.
I have to admit I wouldn't be without him. I think pets bring a great 'peace' to a home. No matter what my father's form is he always has a kind word for the dog.

Hi Geraldine,

Good Job!

You posted that beautiful picture of your Dad and his Schnauzer. Thank you for sharing it with us. One can tell your Dad loves this dog...and I know you do too.

Pets are wonderful. They know your feelings I think...sometimes before even we do.

Hope you and your Dad have a restful, peaceful sleep tonight.

You are all in big trouble
I have been looking on the internet almost all today trying to decide which small dog i can get for Jim
I quiet fancy a
Bichon Frise
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a126/maesisaf/sit%20pictures%20not%20used/dogNancybichon_pdw.jpg

Care and Training: The Bichon Frise requires daily coat care. These Tenerife Dogs require brushing, periodic trimming, and regular bathing. Trim around the eyes and ears with blunt nosed scissors. Clean the eyes to prevent staining. Cleaning gums and teeth is important as well, as Bichons tend to acquire tartar and gum infection. Tenerife Bichons are also hypoallergenic. For the show quality grooming, a specific hair cut is required by the groomer. As for simply pet-owners, the "puppy cut" will suffice. Most of their exercise needs can be met with just playing, but they do love to walk and romp in open areas. Bichon Frises will exercise as long as the owner can stand, and are happy to do so.
Special Needs: Grooming, socialization, and training.
Learning Rate: Very High. Obedience - High. Problem Solving - Very High.

Activity: Outdoors - Medium. Indoors - Very High. Bichons are very high energy and require much attention from their owner. They will run and play for quite a while.
Living Environment: An apartment is fine if daily walks are given. An owner of a Bichon Frise should be patient, consistent and be able to take time to train, exercise and socialize them. Bichon Frise do well with the elderly or disabled, as well as children. Bichon Frises are very good family dogs.

Health Issues: Bichon Frises are fairly healthy dogs, but some common health concerns include luxating patellas, bladder problems, block tear ducts, skin ailments, cancer and autoimmune disease, as well as cataracts and epilepsy.
I was thinking they may need to much time to groom etc, and that i don't have every day
does anyone no anything about them

i think you,ve got it covered heather, you seem to have found all the information you could possibly need, but your right they would need a lot of grooming and i have heard they,re quite expensive if your thinking about a small dog yorkies are great but then i would say that

Hi Susan
I had my dad's yorkie,Pepe because he kept running off,
and he would fight with any dog that was bigger than him,if the door was left open a crack, he would be off, if you came in you had to block your legs , or he would be through them and away
in the summer we had to keep him in a run,
would take him for 2 walks a day,but couldn't let him off the lead

The Bicho run between £150 -300 ,but can't find any one local ish, the nearest is about 3 hour journey, so 6 hour's round trip
have been

The other one was

Welcome to Beausher
Located in the beautiful Vale of Clwyd, Denbighshire, North Wales. [ About 20 /30 min away from me]

I have owned and shown Papillons for over 10 years and shown at both Championship and Open shows. More recently I have also added a pug to my dog family.

We are committed to our dogs, they are our pets first and foremost, and all our puppies are carefully raised amongst a myriad of people, other dogs and experiences.

My dogs are brought up and live as part of the family, housed indoors and therefore, well adapted, well socialised with both adults and children and have super temperments.

All of our pups are born and raised indoors and are gently handled from birth, well socialised, wormed and frontlined and leave home with vet check, homeopathic vaccinations, copy of their pedigree, 6 weeks free insurance, extensive puppy pack, puppy contract and aftercare service for the life of the dog. We offer a committment to the puppy and it's new family, that should circumstances change, for whatever reason, and at whatever age, we will take the dog back or assist with re-homing.

We aim to place puppies in homes which we consider to be responsible, capable and committed to taking care of a dog and can convince us of that. We would prefer people to be honest with us, so we can help you to select the best possible puppy, as improving the breed should come first and foremost. We also only consider a loving "indoor" home as dogs need company and interaction and thrive on it. Occasionally we may have a young adult available of which would benefit from being placed in a permanent loving pet home.
but they don't give a price, so i should imagine we are talking a few hundred pounds
oh well back to the drawing board, i will find one, in time, as i think it would be lovely company for Jim, and i though a nice small one could sleep on his bed and go out with us sitting on his knee,or in a little bag etc, it would give him something to think about

I would like to put in a good word for Lhasa Apso. My Conan is so wonderful, I would give one as a gift to someone with limited mobility! He is great to stay right with me when I go outside. He doesn't even have to be leashed. And he loves to sit beside me or my husband on the sofa and watch television. He wants to be very near, but is not demanding attention. He is content to sit at my feet, too. He follows either of us from room to room and watches whatever we do. The only problematic thing about his personality is that he is so protective. If anyone comes into the house, I must restrain him by picking him up or he will bark and nip at the newcomer. He has never seriously bitten anyone, but he has raised yelps from many of my son's teenage friends. My sister-in-law visits regularly, so she is part of the family for Conan. She has had hip replacement, and cannot chase a dog, so she wants a dog just like Conan, for company.

My Mom has a yorkie. He is a great dog, but Heather's description of the yorkie escape tactics is exactly right. My Mom cannot chase him, but he gets through the door 2 or 3 times per week, and runs through the neighborhood. He comes back after about 15 minutes, but she is always worried he will be hit by a car. We cannot find any way to keep him from running out the open door.

hi diane,

we used to have another yorkie called brandy he died about ten years ago he was an escape artist if he spotted a way to break free he would take it but we always got him back, sometimes we would go to look for him and when we got home he would be sitting on the garden path waiting for us with an expression on his face that said where have you been i,ve been waiting he was so cute.

Hi, Susan. That sounds so like Chris (Mom's dog). He is just so cute, it is hard to scold him for running. It is as though he just wants to visit the neighborhood to see what is going on, then he comes home, happy as can be.

I have a special little friend named Lil Bit whom I treasure and love very much. I bought her for my husband when he was first diagnosed with ALzheimers and she was a terrific companion until he lost interest in her. He would walk her every day and she was always near him....(except when she would hide after he had walked her several times because he forgot he had already gone for a walk.) WE have had her for 8 yrs. and she is now my dog. She is a Maltese, very small, can stay for long periods by herself, does not shed fur, is loyal and fiercely protective. She has been a real companion and keeps me from getting too lonely. I adore her and am so glad I have her.

Hi Heather,
You have my sympathy - how do you choose? Before buying Buddy (a minature schnauzer) we always had boxers. We love boxers but common sense told us that we wouldn't have the time or energy for another one. They need so much exercise and are so lively. Once we decided that we were ready to replace Shan (our last dog) the problem was deciding on what breed to go for. I would have been happy to get a rescue dog but when I weighed up all the pros and cons we decided that it was best to go for a puppy from a breed that had the qualities we were looking for in a dog.
Firstly we didn't want a big dog. Neither did we want a dog that barked at nothing. We also wanted a dog that was easily trained and groomed. We looked through the newspapers and any dogs that we seen advertised we looked them up on the internet. When we saw one we we liked the look of I phoned the kennel club and got the telephone numbers of breeders and then phoned them and discussed what was good and what was bad about the breed. Do you know something, it was a waste of time making those phone calls. Naturally all of the breeders thought their breed was the best and actually speaking to the breeder nearly put me off getting a minature schnauzer. The breeder told me that they barked a lot, had problems with their eyes and if not stopped would eat for ever. I am glad that we disregarded all this and went ahead. Buddy is a great dog. I had him house trained in 3 days (okay he had the odd accident a few times), he does not shed his coat (but has to be clipped 4/5 times a year). He doesn't bark all the time as we trained him not to. He is very friendly and loves to sit up on the seat beside you. He doesn't need much exercise (but I walk him twice a day because I feel guilty if he doesn't get out). He is greedy and loves his food, but we use food to train him as loves it so much. I can let him off the lead and he comes back again no problem. He doesn't run out open doors. He doesn't like to be out off your sight when he's out walking. so he only runs so far and then comes back. He doesn't fight with other dogs, he doesn't chase cyclists or jump up on strangers. I don't know whether this is because of his breed or because of the way we have trained him. My advice to you would be if you like the look of a certain breed go for it. I really do think it's how you rear them that makes them what they are.
I really love Buddy to bits and it wouldn't matter what breed he was. Although there is a lot of work involved in having any dog I reckon they are worth every minute you spend on them. They return it all ten fold!
If you like the look of the papillion, go for it and enjoy.
God bless
Geraldine

Hi Geraldine
Thank you
have found 2 place quiet local that papillons , due in about 3 weeks
We have always had others left overs, our last one was the only pup we had, the question with rescue dogs is why are they there?, we have had lot's of problems, but it gives so much satisfaction when the dog's problems are solved, and they become a member of your family, but i haven't got the time or energy to do that all again, if i did, then i wouldn't hesitate, as everyone wants a lovely fluffy puppy, and will pay a bungle for one

Hi Susan,
I hope you enjoy your holiday. I know how you feel leaving the dogs. I am going off to Romania (it's work) on Friday for 5 weeks and I am distracted about leaving both my dad and the dog. Although I do worry about leaving my dad at least I know that I have left him all his needs and have made arrangements for people to look after him while I am away. I know my brother and his family will have dad spoilt rotten and I will be able to talk to dad every day. I always worry that they will neglect Buddy forget to feed him and not walk him. This is even though my brother assures me that dad ensures that the dog gets fed and walked before his own needs are met. I feel like this every time I leave the pair of them, and when I come home even though I know I am missed they both appear to be very well looked after.
Go and enjoy your holiday. Dogs are very adaptable and quite good at ensuring they are not neglected.
I hope you have a lovely time.
God bless
Geraldine
