Has anyone else had problems with compulsive behavior while taking the drug Mirapex? Fortunately the drug has helped the Parkinsons symptoms greatly ----- But unfortunately ------------the side effects have been very destructive. If this has been a problem ----------- is there anything that has been beneficial in controlling the compulsions???? Help please ----

Hi pdj

Yes i had real trouble with not mirapex Mine was cabasar I think it is the same as mirapex....It is hard to understand how this could happen but i had trouble gambling ..I was so ashamed i told no one for quiet a while ..Then I read about this particular drug having that effect on people ...I phoned my doctor and told them and was taken off them straight away ......lucky I did not do too much damage ....i really dont know how much damage i did ,it went on for about 18 months before i actually realised it was my medication ...It was pretty bad it was all i could think about those pokie machines.I had some councelling and was assured that it was not my fault i had no control over my actions. As soon as soon as i went off the medication the compulsive behaviour went away ,and i got my life back ....Since this happened there has been on t.v a programe about the particular medication i was on and the people who lost heaps of money gambling Through no fault of there own ...apparently there is a law suite going on over it ..It was the most scary thing that happened to me ..i thought about it all the time, each day i would say i was not going, and i would go .Thankfully i have a wonderful husband who was there for me.As if we dont have enough to put up with without something like that happening .So whatever you do get off those tablets .the ones i was on were really good for me too but fortunately i was given some equally as good if not better .... i wish you all the best I thought i could do it without going off the medication i was on but i couldn't.

Just remember it is not you it is the medication

Hi I was on Mirapex for about six months and as far as treating the Parkinsons' it was great. Then the side effect started. Having never had a problem with weight or food I couldn't at first figure out what was happening. I turned into a compulsive eater big time. Gained 30lbs. I would wake up in the night to eat. I told my Doctor this and he sent me to a psychiatrist . Guess what ,she told the Doctor after seeing me that it was the medication and i was put on something else (comtan) not as effective but ok. Good luck !

I am so glad you wrote about compulsive eating. My husband is ravenous all the time. He gets up and cooks things in the toaster oven at night. He has been on Mirapex for about 5 years. I will put that on the list to discuss with dr. next time.

Beware of Stallivo also...My neuro had me get off Comtan instead of mirapex and the low blood pressure finally stopped but mirapex has set me up compulsive gambliing, still, constantly eating, got low blood pressure under control on my own...but i cant take any of the other pd meds so far. Sinemet, sinemet cr, and 1/2 mirapex 2-3 times daily works for me. I cannot take more than 2 doses late in the day, but if i start around 6 a.m. (rarely) i include 1 provigil to keep me awake works for one day. Any changes to my pattern affects me...i can only sleep on my back and roll over edge of bed to get up in teh nite..when off meds...every week is diferent. My neurologist leaves me on my own to adjust my meds..he says my body is too sensitive. i'mm 20 years on pd...i'm 62+ (wow)..In the middle of all this stuff i freeze suddenlly and have to go into a corner and stare til it unfreezes.
