Swallowing is a huge problem for Douglas, especially with the medications and you cannot "crush" them! So, we tried applesauce and find that it does help. It allows the pill to "slide" down easier. Certain foods are also a problem and Douglas is now on semi-blended foods. Try the applesauce or pudding for the pills and see if that helps. It might for the time being!

Hi Susan,
My father has problems swallowing and he has been refered to a speech and swallow therapist. He hasn't started his therapy yet so I don't know what it entails. The therapist assured me that if he does the therapy that his swallow will improve. She also said that the sooner the therapy is started teh more effective it will be. Why don't you see about being refered?
God bless

Hi Bellinghamster.
This is a problem with PD and people who had a stroke
Jim has had it for about 3 years,
hubby needs to be referred to a speech and swallow therapist. [hear it's the same person] and dietitian, they can make sure he is swallowing correctly, and getting enough nutrition
This is what I have done for JIM again it's what works for Jim, but you do need to see the above people ,so he gets correct care for his own personal needs,
1.Medication. Check with you Pharmacist what is available in liquid
or dispersible,[most are ] this will take the stress and worry of medication away
2. Jim can eat anything thick and i put his tablets,on the top of each spoonful then he swallower's them slowly [weetabix with warm milk or porrage great ] potatoes veg any thing thick
3. He loves his cup of tea so i thicken it with " thick and easy powder " on prescription",can be added to cold drinks soups any liquid ,takes a little time to get then hang of mixing it, also at first it's trial and error to what thickness suites him, but i wouldn't be without it, and wouldn't take him out with out it .
4. No matter what he is eating, even soup, get him to chew then swallow
5. if he sounds thick in his throat tell him to put his chin on his chest and try to clear his throat, especially before starting to eat this is what the speech and swallow therapist. showed him
6. I bought a hand blender ,best thing since sliced bread
always blend all meat with gravy or a sauce, meat is very stringy, and needs chewing for digestion as well. when Jim was eating i liquidised his meat, but put the rest of his food on the plate as normal, i still did this when he needed all his food liquidising,as it look horrid all mixed together, and he couldn't face eating it.
7.Fresh fruit is another difficult one, this is one i did liquidised all together would put every fresh fruit available in a jug,[made enough for 2 days keep in air tight container in fridge ] nice with ice cream, tin milk, custard and on it's own
8.Bread, pastry, pasta, chips, and batter are every difficult , so he had to adjust to only having have dinners,
hope this of some help
But please do see your GP to be referred to the the above department
