This may sound rather silly but I wonder if anyone else has what I call involuntary intake of breath. It happens mainly if I am relaxing - watching t.v. etc. I am not sure if I hold my breath without realising and then suddenly instinct takes over or if it is anything to do with P.D. Apologies if you think I am slightly dotty.

The best tip I can give (and this works for us ) is to try DEEP BREATHING this is very simple and involves breathing in using your stomach. If your doing it properly your stomach will swell out every time you inhale! You should do this at a relatively slow rate and you should find after a while you will breathe like this on a regular basis.BELIEVE ME IT MAKES YOU FEEL A WHOLE LOT BETTER.Try it.
Love to All -Gary

Hi Heather-try this-AS YOU BREATHE IN DEEPLY THROUGH YOUR NOSE PUSH YOUR STOMACH FOREWARD -this should do the trick.
best wishes -Gary

It is part of PD Pauline, but do check with your doctor as well as i'm not up on medication
the speech therapist taught Jim how to tuck his chin tight on his chest, and try to cough
In what way are you having problems with swallowing, Jim would take in air as he was drinking, or things like soup, no problem with food that was thick ,
we added a some of thick and easy,it takes a little time to getting the hang of mixing it, can be added to cold and hot food/drinks, but it rely works

Sylvia, I do that also. I didn't know it had anything to do with Parkinson's. I have sleep apnea and I just thought it was sort of related to that.

This is another question. I have lost my sense of direction. Can't tell east from west, etc. They all look the same. Does anyone else have that? Is it connected to PD?

Welcome Sylvia,
We are all friends here on the wonderful Forum. Don't ever think ANYTHING you write about, question, etc. will ever be considered silly.
I, along with one of our sons are caregivers for my husband who has PD. He was diagnosed 3 1/2 years ago. But we think he had it a time before he was diagnosed.
What you mentioned above, about the sudden, involuntary intake of air, especially while you are relaxing, watching tv, etc...happens to my husband all the time. Sometimes it even happens while he is sleeping.
NO ONE IS "DOTTY" HERE! Take my word for it. The others all will agree with me...so there you have it! Not to worry...ok?
I've been on this Forum since it started and I am still learning how to use everything on it properly. Be patient with me please if my 'talks' with you wind up in the wrong place.
Margie :)
